Orissa not adding value to its raw exports

Mr RS Gujral director general of foreign trade observed that the slump in exports caused by the twin blow of low demand and decline in international prices calls for diversification to newer international markets and states like Orissa have unfortunately been exporting raw material, raw fish without adding value.

Addressing a interactive session with entrepreneurs Mr Gujral said that value addition is not taking place in the state and the bulk of the exports from Orissa is ore and raw fish and even in the metal sector it more of alumina rather that gets exported.

He also lamented that he is flooded with queries and problems from entrepreneurs of other states but he is yet to get any mail from exporters of Orissa.

Mr Gujral said that there has been a marginal improvement in exports last month as the decline which was at a high of 35% had dropped to 19%. He said that stimulus packages of the government, lowering of lending rates etc have been effected but then one has to bear in mind that all this adds to the fiscal deficit.

Mr Gujral said that the Foreign Trade Policy 2009-14 has targeted a 15% annual growth and several measures like cutting down transaction costs, enhancement of the Focus Market Scheme and Focus Product Scheme, inclusion of new markets and new products have been initiated.
