China launches world fastest train service

China on Saturday launched what it described as the world’s fastest train service covering a distance of 1068 kilometers at the average speed of 350 kilometers an hour. The distance between Wuhan in central China and Guangzhou in the country’s south was covered by the high peed train in two hours forty five minutes.

The new service will cut the travel time between these cities by more than six hours. The train reached a maximum speed of 394.2 kilometers per hour during trail runs that begun on December 9.

The commercial operation was launched y with two trains covering the distance while passing through 20 different cities along the route.

Sources said that the high speed line will use technology developed in co-operation with foreign firms such as Siemens, Bombardier and Alstom.

The new service is expected to act as a catalyst in the development of central China that includes backward areas like Xianning by linking it to the highly developed Pearl River Delhi, which is an industrial hub in south China.

Developments of Cochin Port to benefit local economy

The development projects envisaged by the Cochin Port Trust will have multiple effects on Kochi's economy as it would enhance tourism potential, promotion of hospitality industry and other allied industries besides creating more job opportunities.

In a presentation Cochin Port Trust the Engine of Economic Prosperity made at a one day workshop on the development of the district by the Ernakulam District Residents Association Apex Council Mr Cyril C George secretary of Cochin Port Trust said that the development projects worth about INR 10000 crore centred on the port are progressing in a time bound manner.

He said that the first phase of the INR 2118 crore International Container Transhipment Terminal at Vallarpadam will be commissioned in April and 70% of construction work had been completed. As the Indian port closest to the international maritime route, the Kochi port enjoys the advantage of being strategically located.

He added that at present, 65% of the country's container traffic was being transshipped through ports in neighboring countries. Once the ICTT project starts operations, he said the country's import and export industry will gain INR 6000 to INR 12000 on each container.

Referring to the proposed LNG terminal, he said major portion of the construction works of the project at Puthuvypeen had been completed. The project entails investment worth about INR 16000 crore. Likewise, tenders had also been invited for a bunkering terminal project worth INR 95crore.

Mr George further said that plans were also afoot to set up an International Cruise Terminal at an estimated cost of INR 400 crore in the Willingdon Island. Ever since the cruise liner of the German company AIDA cruises had chosen Kochi as its turn around port more than 2,000 foreign tourists had passed through the port.

Construction firms urged to merge in Saudi Arabia

It is reported that family owned construction companies in Saudi Arabia have been urged to merge and form joint stock companies.

Mr Abdullah bin Bakr Radwan member of CSCCI's National Committee for Contractors said that Saudi contractors should take advantage of the massive construction boom in the Kingdom as the government's spending on infrastructure projects was exceeding SAR 60 billion per year.

Mr Radwan reminded the contractors of the recommendations of the first National Contractors Forum held in Jeddah last year. According to him, call for merger of contracting firms was one of the strongest recommendations which were further reinforced by another forum held in the Eastern Province.

He said that during the construction boom of 1970s, most of the enterprises were family based who drove their strength from the founder of the business. Then after his death, the business would suffer.

Mr Radwan said that the Saudi contractors must not miss the opportunity to consolidate their position in the current phase of construction boom. Unlike the 70s when temporary alliances were formed for particular projects, merger of contracting companies was need of the hour. This would specially enable smaller companies to work under big banners and compete for huge projects as it is done in advanced countries.

Chinese steel traders increasing inventory to combat winter storages

Due to steel mills price hike lately some Chinese steel traders start to increase their winter storage near the end of the year. This situation leads larger trading volume between businesses when small traders increase winter storage meanwhile large traders increase shipments. However procurement enthusiasm of end-users seems still not high.

Mr. Chen from Beijing Chang Yu Shun Thai Trade Co Ltd said because of downtime of most construction sites in Beijing their main target market the trading volume and shipment are not good. They have increased some winter shortage and there are still some inventories left.

With general EXW price hike and expectation of price rise of main northern steel mills such as Shougang and Hebei Iron and Steel, some traders said that they do have plans to increase winter storage but under unclear change trend in future steel market are still cautious during operation so the purchase has not been large so far.

Lai Xiaojing analyst from Trade Futures holds that construction steel price is stable and with high inventory and weak demand there is limit increasing possibility. The price is likely to be dominated by consolidation.

Egypt to build biggest car tyre factory in MEA

Reuters reported that Egypt is planning to build the biggest car tyre factory in the Middle East at a cost of EGP 600 million.

As per report, Egypt has tried to spur industrial exports as a way of buoying economic growth and providing jobs for its 77 million people, but the global financial crisis and competition from Asian manufacturers have curbed some of its efforts.

Mr Taher Salama head of the state owned Transport and Engineering Company said that "Domestic tyre exports face big problems due to the entrance of Chinese producers in African markets, particularly the COMESA nations, at very low prices."

The report said that the new factory will be able to produce 1.5 million tyres annually. It will take two years to build and will be located in El-Amerya, west of the Mediterranean port city of Alexandria.

It added that Egyptian, Arab and foreign investors will take part in the factory's financing. Trenco currently exports to Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States and plans to export to Sudan.

The stalemate could be propelled due to following factors

1. Unclear trend in future market, there is strong wait and see attitude in downstream demand and the demand of traders is also weak.

2. Inventory continues to be on upward trend in Shanghai. Cargo storage vessels started to increase last week and even had to queue in some terminals for discharge. Despite the rising trend of total inventory, specific specifications supply is still tight and with price up which could play a certain role in supporting the price of other resources.

3. Inversion of EXW prices and market prices in most Chinese local markets. And this seems to make dealers winter storage program a dilemma embarrassment.

4, Chinese production capacity release is still high with Chinese steel production grew by more than 32% and wire production by more than 46% in November compared to the same period the year before.

Although some steel traders hold wait and see attitude and operate cautiously under the pressure of supply and demand stalemate weak demand and Inversion of ex-factory price and market price, most traders are still optimistic about the future market and cheap sell-off phenomenon is relatively rare which is also constitute a certain degree of support.

NTPC not to suffer INR 300 billion loss – Government

It is reported that state run NTPC will not suffer INR 300 billion loss if it was to get natural gas at prices higher than those committed by Reliance Industries five years ago.

NTPC had taken RIL to court seeking implementation of the Mukesh Ambani run firm’s 2004 bid to supply 12 mmscmd of gas at USD 2.34 per mmBtu for 17 years.

Mr Bharatsinh Solanki minister of state for power in a written reply to Rajya Sabha said that “There is no loss to NTPC on account of fuel cost as the fuel cost is a pass through to beneficiaries (customers).”

He said that “NTPC’s tariff is determined by Central Electricity Regulatory Commission. As per the regulation for fixing the tariff under the Electricity Act 2003, the fuel cost is a pass through to beneficiary states/union territories who in turn realize this from consumers.”

M V Mysura Reddy had asked if RIL’s dishonoring of the contract would cause a loss of INR 300 billion to NTPC.

Mr Solanki said that “However, to protect the long term interests of its customers, NTPC always strives to source fuel at the most competitive price.”

He said the fuel cost at the delivered price of gas of USD 3.30 per mmBtu works out to INR 1.07 per unit while the same at the delivered cost of USD 6.67 per mmBtu comes to INR 2.17 per unit.

MEA rebar producers face cramped elbow room

The recent flutter in international price has throttled efforts by the mills to cope and cater the depression in this MEA region.

It is evident that the Middle Eastern market has remained largely unscathed from the glimmer of revival visible elsewhere. Rebar mills being the mainstay of Middle Eastern steel market are sinking under its own weight as the consumption of rebars in UAE, has plummeted by a heart breaking 50% from around 5.5 million tonnes last year, to 2.6 million tonnes in 2009.

Undoubtedly the domestic demand has remained abysmal crushed with impunity every time it has raised its head marked by consecutive debacles. The fear of economic bankruptcy has left an indelible imprint on the sagging economy.

Reeling under the endless gloom rebar prices have towed declination. Rebar is being quoted at around AED 1850 per tonne (USD 503) in the domestic market.

Gulf Marine secures fund for acquisitions

Abraaj Capital and Waha Capital backed Gulf Marine Maintenance and Offshore Service Company has secured USD 100 million term loan facility from Standard Chartered Bank, Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank, Credit Suisse and Deutsche Bank to refinance existing debt and fund acquisitions in the offshore supply vessel sector, with a focus on the GCC and South East Asia markets.

As per report, the acquisitions are expected to lead to a significant increase in Group profitability and asset base with the Group's current fleet increasing from 28 OSVs to 34 OSVs by the end of 2009. A number of the new vessels to be acquired operate on a term charter basis in South East Asia, supplementing the group's current activities in the GCC and India and further expanding the Group's client base. As a result of the acquisitions, GMMOS Group fleet age is estimated to be well below the average age in the sector.

The acquisitions are consistent with the shareholders' strategy to expand and enhance the GMMOS offshore OSV fleet and chartering capabilities increasing its scale and transforming GMMOS into one of the largest fleet owner operators in the MENASA region.

OPEC countries to invest more than 120 upstream projects

Emirates Business reported that more than 120 upstream projects worth USD 120 billion will be taken up in OPEC countries in the next 5 years.

As per report, members of the Organization of Oil Producing and Exporting Countries will not leave their plans for upstream capacity expansion in the wake of sober oil demand projections. Data available from OPEC World Oil Outlook for 2009 states that 120 projects worth USD 120 billion will be taken up in OPEC countries in the next 5 years.

Dubai based analysts said that even though major oil companies in the region may continue with their expansion projects they may not actually extract oil from wells now.

Mr Dheeraj Shahdadpuri a DIFC based oil analyst said that the companies may decide to wait for the next 3 to 5 months before the demand for oil picks up to a commendable extent. There may be projects where even though every other activity related to the project may be carried out the actual oil drilling may not begin."

OPEC said that the oil and gas projects are in addition to infrastructure projects currently on in the region. These projects are in addition to all energy infrastructure projects, such as pipelines export terminals and downstream expansion schemes. Most of these projects spreading from countries like Angola and Algeria to Saudi Arabia are expected to be financed by the respective governments.

Abu Dhabi may see cost rise for USD 100 billion investment drive

Mr Abdul Kadir Hussain CEO of Dubai based Mashreq Capital said that "The Dubai World situation has called the concept of implied government support into question and ratings agencies will review companies in the UAE and probably in the region for standalone ratings."

Moody's Investor Services last week placed the debt ratings of 6 high profile Abu Dhabi government investment firms on review for possible downgrade, citing a need to revalidate and possibly reconsider assumptions of government support in Abu Dhabi and Dubai after Dubai World's call for restructuring.

GCC industrialization plans offering investment opportunities

MEED reported that opportunities for contractors have dwindled in the real estate sector since the onset of the global slowdown but the GCC’s industrialization plans offer a rich seam of potential work.

As per report, industrialization is a core component of the economic development plans being implemented by the 6 GCC states.

Abu Dhabi, for example, in its Economic Vision 2030 master plan, cites petrochemicals and metals manufacturing as key engines of growth that are vital to the emirate’s development, alongside investment in healthcare and education infrastructure. Each of the Gulf States has initiated a raft of government-backed industrial projects in a bid to diversify their economies beyond a dependence on oil revenues. With these master plans come major contract and supply opportunities for the region’s construction and engineering companies.

Bank consolidation is the need of hour - ASSOCHAM

In a bid to widen assets base of leading Indian banks as also enhance their global competitiveness, The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India has called for Bank’s consolidation without any delay despite dithering of Reserve Bank of India on the issue.

The ASSOCHAM analysis titled The Need for Banking Sector Consolidation after having analyzed position of total assets of India’s ten largest banks vis à vis size of it’s GDP at end of fiscal 2008-09 finds that size of Indian banks in terms of their assets stands very small to make optimal use of their capacities to raise funds at internationally competitive rates. The balance sheets of top 10 Indian banks suggest the greater scope of consolidation to reap the benefits of large sized globally competitive Indian banks.
