MV Black Rose in pollution board glare

Scientists of the Orissa State Pollution Control Board and officials of the forest and environment department arrived to monitor steps being taken to avert the leakage of fuel oil from the wreckage of the MV Black Rose which sunk last week even as the Paradip Port Trust authorities contacted national and international experts who are capable of pumping out the oil from the wreckage.

Port authorities said that a PPT pollution control vessel and coast guard vessels are in readiness round the clock to meet any eventuality in combating oil pollution.

The port authorities said the wreck does not pose any imminent danger to the channel of the port and the oil of the vessel is secured and stored inside her double bottom tank which is normally very secure. It is also extremely difficult to retrieve the oil from the vessel, added port authorities, saying that the primary responsibility of retrieving the oil from the sunken vessel rests with the owner of the vessel.

They said that a delay in the discharge of fuel oil and cargo from the said vessel is worrisome as its very existence to some level and threatens marine life. Reliable sources said the ministry had alerted the state government which in turn has asked the state pollution control board and the state disaster mitigation authority to visit Paradip and monitor the situation along with the coast guard and the port trust authorities.
