TATA Steel which has proposed to set up INR 21,000 crore plants in Orissa's Kalinganagar said the land acquisition process for the project would be completed soon and work would start by December.
Mr BK Singh VP of the Orissa project told reporters that "We hope that the land issues will be resolved soon. We hope to start work on the project by December.”
The official, however, did not give any definite date for commencing the project. Mr Singh said that "I do not give a definite date, but we hope things would be resolved by December and we will start work soon.”
Mr Singh admitted that TATA Steel has not been able to resume construction work on the proposed steel plant as per its targeted timelines due to resistance from the anti displacement people belonging to the affected villages. He told reporters that “There is a group of 100 odd anti displacement people who have held up construction work on our steel plant. However, of late, the district administration has shown resolve in persuading these people and we are going to commence construction work on our steel project positively by December this year.”
He informed that “TATA Steel has already shifted 740 out of the 1195 families and we are in talks with the rest. The company can kick off construction work on its steel plant even without shifting all the families. But let me tell you, we do not want any confrontation keeping in view of the sensitive nature of the issue. We want to forget the past and start the project in an amicable way with the cooperation of local people. The rehabilitation work is going on. The state government has also come forward.”
TATA Steel has been facing stiff resistance from local residents against acquiring land for the 6 million tonne per annum project. The mega project suffered a major setback January 2nd 2006 when 13 tribals were killed in a police firing.
