Tokyo Gas Co said that it will participate in the production of liquefied natural gas made from coal bed methane in the Australian state of Queensland.
The Queensland Curtis LNG Project, which is operated by British firm BG Group Plc, is the first in the world to convert coal bed methane into LNG.
Tokyo Gas will spend some JPY 3 billion to buy a 1.25% interest in the project and has inked a 20 year agreement to purchase 1.2 million tonnes of its LNG annually starting from 2015. The amount accounts for 11% of Tokyo Gas' LNG imports.
