Geraldton unlikely to become iron ore port

It is reported that the Western Australian Government says it is unlikely there will be any further investment in infrastructure to cater for iron ore exports from Geraldton Port.

Mount Gibson Iron ships about 3.5 million tonnes a year from its Tallering Peak operation and is planning to double that figure once its Extension Hill mine begins production.

Premier Mr Colin Barnett said iron ore exports through Geraldton are a transitional measure and any Government expenditure will be on Oakajee.

He said that "Our emphasis and our expenditure will be very much concentrated at Oakajee, so exports through Geraldton are basically a transition mechanism and so some projects like Extension Hill may use the port, but any major investment in infrastructure for the ports will go into Oakajee not Geraldton."

He added that "The point needs to be made, Geraldton is a very attractive regional city, it has a lot of potential to grow and the Government will not allow Geraldton harbor to become an iron ore port."
