Shandong ports throughput exceeds 700 million tonnes in 2009

It is reported that the year 2009 saw the business of ports grow on Shandong peninsula with port throughput reaching 730 million tonnes up by 12.3%YoY with 2008, 3% higher than the national average rate of increase in port business. Ore throughput hit 240 million tonnes in 2009 ranking No 1 in China.

The CNY 4 trillion stimulus package launched by the Chinese government heated up demand for crude materials such as ores and oils, which spurred more port business.

1. Qingdao port registered 10 million twenty equivalent units of container materials in 2009 for total throughput of 315 million tonnes, an increase of 5%YoY.

2. Yantai port finished with 123 million tonnes of cargo in 2009, a 10.6%YoY increase. The port outgoing throughput of fertilizer and inbound throughput of bauxite were ranked first in China.

3. Longkou port was committed to cargo business with African countries. To date, the port has developed into China largest port sending materials to African countries with its cargo throughput exceeding 35 million tonnes last year.

4. The Rizhao port throughput surpassed 180 million tonnes last year a 20%YoY increase.

To expand its port capacity, Shandong completed five ports projects in 2009 adding 11 berths that can allow 6.52 million tonnes of cargo to pass through.
