Ministry reviewing coal licences issued to private players

It is reported that Union Minister of State for Coal Sriprakash Jaiswal’s ministry is reviewing the licences issued to private players who are not operating.

Mr Jaiswal who reviewed the performance of Western Coalfields told reporters that "We have already issued notices to 40 such parties out of over 200 who were allotted coal blocks and are found to be treating it as real estate.”

He said that it is unfortunate that these private entrepreneurs are not mining in the coal blocks and thereby blocking development. His ministry is in the process of cancellation of such licences and was in touch with Law Ministry to avoid any litigation.

On import of coal, Mr Jaiswal said those units close to sea ports including cement and sponge iron units would be encouraged to opt for imported coal since coal transportation from one part to other was costly.
