GAIL inks pact with Kerala

It is reported that Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation and GAIL India have signed a bilateral agreement that envisages investment of up to INR 8,500 crore in gas based infrastructure in the State.

As per report Mr Alkesh Sharma MD of KSIDC and Mr J Wason executive director marketing of GAIL signed the bilateral agreement at a function. With this, the long drawn LNG terminal at Kochi a gas pipeline project for supplying natural gas and a city gas distribution project are expected to become a reality.

The report said that KSIDC and GAIL will jointly conduct Techno Economic Feasibility report and developing the CGD and related distribution infrastructure.

KSIDC will also act as the nodal agency of the Government to facilitate information and co-ordinate grant of all necessary permissions/clearances and partner in the development of CGD and natural gas distribution infrastructure.

Giving a background, an official spokesman said that Petronet LNG a joint venture of GAIL, ONGC, IOC and BPCL is setting up the LNG terminal at an estimated investment of INR 4,000 crore.

The project which will have re gasification capacity of 2.5 mmtpa initially will be expanded to 5 mmtpa. It is expected to be commissioned by 2012.

GAIL will develop the gas pipeline infrastructure required in the State for natural gas to be supplied for various applications to a variety of end-user projects. These can have a cascading effect on the industrial and economic development of the State.

GAIL will facilitate two gas pipelines, viz. the Kochi-Kanjirakode-Mangalore/Bangalore pipeline and the sub sea gas pipeline from Kochi to NTPC, Kayamkulam.

The 1,114 kilometer Kochi to Bangalore to Mangalore pipeline is estimated to cost INR 3,032 crore while the Kochi-Kayamkulam sub sea pipeline is envisaged to cost around INR 1,000 crore.
