TATA Steel to move coal through coastal route

Exim News Service reported that TATA Steel has taken the initiative to move imported coal from Gangavaram port to Haldia by the coastal route. The first vessel, carrying 20,000 tonnes of coal is however, still waiting for berth at Haldia due to congestion.

TATAs imported around 200000 tonnes of coking coal via Gangavaram port instead of Paradip Port where the average pre berthing detention time has risen to 21 days in view of acute congestion. Of the 200000 tonnes, 100000 tonnes have already been evacuated out of Gangavaram port by rail.

However, some railway bottlenecks and high cost of rail transportation from Gangavaram port to Jamshedpur has prompted the company to opt for coastal movement instead.

Sources said that as the pre berthing detention at Paradip has eased to seven days or so now, there are no further plans for imports through Gangavaram port.

For TATA Steel, Haldia was the most preferred Port because the rail connectivity from the Port to the company’s Jamshedpur plant is most suitable in terms of time, distance and availability of rakes.
