SAIL RSP to go for re tendering for new plate mill

BL reported that Steel Authority of India Limited’s Rourkela Steel Plant has re tendered the plate mill to be installed under the on going expansion program.

Mr SS Mohanty ED of RSP explained that the re tendering had been done to take benefit of the price advantage due to the present meltdown. He said that “The global tender has been floated and we hope to place the order shortly.”

He hoped that it should be possible to procure the mill at a substantially reduced cost.

Mr Mohanty said that the blast furnace too was being acquired at a reduced cost. Mr Mohanty pointed out that the orders for most of the plants under expansion scheme including steel melting shops, sintering plant and others were placed between end-2007 and early 2008 with the result the benefit of the meltdown, which started in end 2008, could not be obtained.

He estimated the cost of the expansion program entailing capacity increase from 2 million tonnes to 4.5 million tonnes annually at INR 11,800 crore, up from the original INR 6,800 crore.
