New Mangalore Port Trust handled 15.23 million tonnes of cargo during April to August 2009 during the current financial year against 15.09 million tonne in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal.
Mr S Gopalakrishna Traffic manager of NMPT said that the port witnessed growth in the handling of POL products, LPG, iron ore, fertilizer and limestone during April to August period.
The container traffic witnessed a growth of 12.05% during the period. The port handled 13,644 TEUs of containers during the first five months of the current fiscal against 12,176 TEUs in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal.
Mr P Tamilvanan chairman of NMPT said that the container traffic at the port is steadily increasing over the past four years. Considering the growth, the port will go ahead with the establishment of a container terminal at the port on BOT basis.
