Indian Railways register 12pct growth in freight in August

Beating the slowdown, Indian Railways have registered about 12% growth in freight loading in August. As per report total loading in August was 72.9 million tonnes as against 65.27 million tonnes the corresponding period last year.

A senior Railway Ministry official said that “The growth in August this year in comparison to last year was about 11.67%. The final data will be compiled by next week/.”

The official said that in July, railways had registered 5.83% increase in goods loadings. Freight loading is witnessing an upward trend due to the surge in demand for coal, cement, steel, food grains and petroleum products.

The growth in loading has been recorded in coal 16.5%, cement and steel by 15%, food grains by 11% and petroleum products by 14%. However, there is a negative growth of 5% in fertilizer loading.

The Railways have undertaken steps to attract bulk traffic by offering incentives. The freight loading target has been fixed at 882 million tonnes for 2009-10 an increase of 49 million tonnes over 2008-09.
