BHEL expects USD 2.2 billion order from NTPC

Bloomberg reported that Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd expects to get orders worth at least INR 109 billion (USD 2.2 billion) from state owned NTPC Ltd as the utility plans to add generators.

The government allowed the country’s biggest power producer last month to invite bids to supply equipment for five projects with a combined capacity of 7,260 megawatts. The generators will use so called supercritical technology that needs less coal to produce electricity and reduces carbon dioxide emissions.

Mr K Ravi Kumar chairman of Bharat Heavy in a phone interview said that “We have been assured of a part of the order, at least half of it. We will have to match the lowest bid. The equipment costs about 30 million rupees a megawatt. You can calculate the total.”

According to a government statement, state owned Bharat Heavy will compete with rivals including Alstom SA, Larsen & Toubro Ltd and a venture between Toshiba Corp and JSW Steel Ltd.

BHEL has 1.3 trillion rupees of orders in hand as utilities plan to almost double generation capacity in the five years to March 2012 to ease power shortages in the world’s second fastest-growing major economy.
