After some decrease of pig iron imports to US in December last year to the level of less than 290,000 tonnes in the beginning of the current year on the background of steel production increase in the country a growth of pig iron imports has been noticed.
In accordance with US Department of Commerce, Bureau of the Census data, in January 2010 US imported merely 326,000 tonnes of pig iron, which is 14.6% over the figure of the previous month. However, in compared to January 2009, it is a sufficient reduction by 25.2%. However, January 2009 level was the maximum monthly figure that year.
The major suppliers of pig iron to US have reduced their supplies to this market, except South Africa and Ukraine. If Brazil reduced its pig iron supplies to US in January this year by 46% to January 2009 to the level of 131500 tonnes, Russia reduced by 51.6% to 51500 tons, Ukraine merely doubled its pig iron export to US to 108600 tonnes. South Africa increased pig iron shipments to US by 32.9% to 33000 tons.
According to US Department of Commerce, Bureau of the Census data, this year the major import supplies of pig iron to US distribute by country of origin as follows Brazil 40.4%, Ukraine 33.4%, Russia 15.8%.
