According to Mr Sudhir Mehta chairman of Torrent Power Ltd, the installed capacity of the gas based private sector Sugen Mega Power Project set up near here by Torrent Power Ltd would be scaled up from the current 1147.5 MW to 4,500 MW in the second and third phases in the next five to seven years.
Mr Mehta on the sidelines of a function to formally dedicate it to the nation by the Gujarat chief minister said that the project currently consists of three units of 382.5 MW set up at an investment of nearly INR 3,000 crore. Work on the plant began in September 2005 and it was commissioned in August 2009.
He said that Torrent Power Ltd is also looking into diversifying into solar power and wind power generation for which feasibility studies are in progress, he said. The company would also be expanding its power transmission business in Uttar Pradesh, beyond the existing Agra, Kanpur, Bihar and Rajasthan.
From October 1, it would start distributing 200 MW of Sugen electricity to Rajasthan. Besides, TPL would also be participating in the bidding process in power generation and distribution businesses elsewhere in the country.
The Sugen plant at INR 2.65 crore a MW has been designed to substantially reduce emissions. TPL has also signed a joint venture with Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd to construct and erect a 400 kV double circuit transmission line connecting Sugen to Ahmedabad and PGCIL’s transmission system at Dehgam in Gandhinagar district.
