World Steel Association recognized TATA Steel for demonstrating excellence in safety and health programs. The award was received by Mr H M Nerurkar MD of TATA Steel Limited.
The Company was selected based on its operations abiding by three basic safety and health guidelines:
1. Program positively embraced the 'worldsteel' safety and health principles
2. Program was able to demonstrate a measurable impact upon safety metrics
3. Program could easily be applied to other member companies
TATA Steel's program concentrated on their contract workforce who received comprehensive training prior to the construction of a new blast furnace. The new furnace was built and commissioned without any injuries, recording 35 million accident-free hours during project construction.
TATA Steel's safety and occupational health responsibilities is driven by the Company's commitment to ensure zero harm to people it works with and society at large and is integral to its business process. This has been laid down in its Safety & Occupational Health Policy. The Company initiated a safety excellence journey under the guidance of DuPont resources, a world-class leader in safety. The safety program which began at TATA Steel Works for both employees and contractor employees, have been rolled out across all locations including Mines. These initiatives have led to a perceptible change in behavior including that of contractors and outside places of work. The Company aspires to become a global benchmark in safe operations.
TATA Steel is a pioneer in healthcare provisions for employees and their families, with many policies long pre dating national law. In 2006 a system to ensure contract worker health checks was introduced, and in response to the SA8000 2007 certification audit, additional policies were introduced to provide contract workers with better health checks. All categories of workers now receive occupational health checks, contract workers undergo vision screening and hearing tests and blood typing, and screening is to be offered to their families as well. As noted before, the company tests for color blindness and if indicated by the health check, a color blind person can then be assigned a job where their condition will not be a handicap. 35,000 contract workers have been checked to date. Starting in 2007, two day sessions promoting the health of workingwomen have also taken place, educating 600 contract workers as of mid-2008. Some of the contractors firms pay some session costs; others are entirely covered by TATA Steel.
The promotion of excellence in safety and health practices, endorsed at the highest level, is one of the fundamental goals of all worldsteel member companies. The set of principles outlined in the worldsteel policy statement is the basis for creating a safe and healthy workplace for everyone in the industry. Worldsteel launched the Safety and Health Excellence Recognition Award at its 2008 Annual General Meeting in Washington DC. Five companies received recognition for their outstanding work in the area of safety and health promotion. This year, three awards have been made, once again demonstrating the commitment by worldsteel members to an injury free, illness free and healthy workplace.
